Pillar mountain, Lake District
An experienced fell walker fell 600ft down Pillar mountain in the Lake District after slipping on ice near the summit. He was halted by snow debris just 20ft from a cliff edge and sustained a broken neck, head lacerations, and a chipped elbow bone. Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team, the Coastguard, and the Great North Air Ambulance evacuated him by helicopter to hospital, where he underwent neck surgery and is expected to make a full recovery.
