Water Rescue/Concern for Life at River North East Serious incident

Emergency services were called to Gainford on Friday afternoon following concerns for a man who had entered the River Tees. A major response was mounted involving air ambulance, police helicopter, mountain rescue, paramedics, and fire crews.

Ebchester Bridge, County Durham

injured walker North East

A man suffered an ankle injury in woodland near Ebchester Bridge, County Durham, and was located by mountain rescue teams. He was stretchered out of the woodland and across rough ground to an ambulance, then taken to University Hospital of North Durham.

Outcome: casualty evacuated by stretcher to hospital

River Tees, County Durham

injured kayaker North East

An injured kayaker capsized in the River Tees in County Durham on 1 February and suffered upper body injuries. Multiple rescue teams coordinated to carry him up a steep river bank on a stretcher before being winched aboard a HM Coastguard helicopter and airlifted to James Cook University Hospital.

Outcome: airlifted to hospital by Coastguard helicopter

Hamsterley Forest

mountain bike crash North East

A cyclist fell from his mountain bike at Hamsterley Forest and lost consciousness for approximately three hours. He was rescued by Teesdale and Weardale Mountain Rescue and taken to hospital with minor head, neck and other injuries.

Outcome: casualty transported to hospital with minor injuries

swimming fatality North East Serious incident

A 16-year-old died after getting into difficulties while swimming beneath High Force waterfall in Middleton-in-Teesdale on Tuesday. He was recovered from the water by fire brigade rescue and airlifted to hospital but later died. Five other teenagers in the water were uninjured.

Outcome: teenager died in hospital

Climbing/Rescue North East

Mountain rescue volunteers assisted a young boy who became stuck on a climbing crag at the Drake Stone. The operation required rigging a technical rope system to safely lower him to ground level after a two-and-a-half-hour effort involving multiple agencies.

Outcome: Rescued safely

River Wear, Durham city centre

missing person North East

A 19-year-old Durham University law student disappeared after leaving a nightclub in Durham city centre on Wednesday night and was last seen on CCTV near Framwellgate Bridge heading towards the riverbank. Specialist search and rescue teams from Teesdale and Wearside were searching the River Wear, with police treating it as an active missing person investigation with growing concerns for his safety.

High Force, Middleton-in-Teesdale

Drowning/Water Rescue North East Serious incident

A teenager sadly died after difficulties while swimming beneath a waterfall in County Durham. Rescue services were called to the area following the incident, and other individuals who were in the water were reported as uninjured.

Chester-le-Street

missing person North East

A 50-year-old man has been missing from Chester-le-Street since 27 December 2009. He left home without required medication and spectacles during severe winter weather. Teesdale and Weardale Mountain Rescue Service assisted police in searching local woodland and the surrounding area.
