Injury/Rescue Highlands

Ochils Mountain Rescue Team responded to a call in the Tillicoultry area of Ochil Hills on Sunday afternoon. Volunteers attended to a hiker who had sustained a serious leg injury before safely carrying them off the hill for ambulance transfer.

Outcome: Transported to hospital

Alva Glen, Alva

injured walker - significant fall Highlands Serious incident

A 27-year-old woman sustained a significant fall in Alva Glen on 13 June 2023 and was rescued from a gorge using technical rope rescue systems. She was airlifted to hospital by HM Coastguard Rescue 199, whilst her companions walked off the hill uninjured.

Outcome: casualty airlifted to hospital by rescue helicopter

Ballachulish / Glen Nevis

Training Exercise Highlands

The Ochils Mountain Rescue Team conducted their annual winter training over the weekend. Activities included practicing personal and rescue skills in a winter environment, with specific sessions held on Schoolhouse Ridge above Ballachulish and technical rescue drills in Glen Nevis.

Outcome: Successful completion of annual winter training.

A woman sustained a leg injury while hiking on the Ochil Hills in Clackmannanshire and was airlifted to hospital. Multiple emergency services including Ochils Mountain Rescue, Scottish Ambulance Service Special Operations Team, and Helimed 5 coordinated the rescue, carrying the casualty by stretcher to the helicopter.

Outcome: airlifted to hospital by helicopter

West Lomond

injured hill runner Highlands

A hill runner from Aberdour fell on West Lomond on Sunday morning, sustaining a broken leg, torn ligaments and an ankle injury. The Ochils Mountain Rescue Team and a coastguard helicopter attended, and the casualty was stretchered down and airlifted to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee.

Outcome: casualty airlifted to hospital by coastguard helicopter

West Lomond (Craigmead area)

Fall/Injury Highlands

Mountain rescue teams were called out to assist with the rescue of a walker who had fallen in the Craigmead area of West Lomond. The injured individual was successfully moved off the hill using specialized equipment and subsequently transferred to hospital.

Outcome: Transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries

Dumyat in the Ochil Hills

Paragliding accident Highlands

A paraglider crashed near Stirling on Dumyat in the Ochil Hills. The Ochils Mountain Rescue Team and Ambulance Service responded to the scene, and a helicopter was used to airlift the individual to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow.

Outcome: Rescued and transported to hospital

Ochils, near Menstrie

missing person Highlands Serious incident

A 51-year-old woman from Alloa went missing on 1 March 2018 after becoming lost in the Ochils near Menstrie during blizzard conditions. Despite a major search and rescue operation involving police, coastguard and mountain rescue volunteers, her body was recovered the following afternoon near Dumyat Farm.

Outcome: casualty found deceased

Bidean nam Bian, Glencoe

A 39-year-old climber fell and died on Bidean nam Bian in Glencoe on 8 March 2013. This was the 12th mountain death in Scotland that year, prompting public debate about mountain safety and rescue services.

Carron Valley, Stirlingshire

missing person Highlands

A retired hill farmer with dementia, Tom Robb, disappeared on 25 August 2012 while walking in Carron Valley, Stirlingshire, despite extensive searches by mountain rescue teams, police dogs, and a helicopter. No trace of him has been found. A memorial trail race is being organised by his family to raise funds for Alzheimer's Scotland and Ochils Mountain Rescue.

Outcome: not found despite extensive searches

A 26-year-old man missing for two days was found at the bottom of cliffs at Dumyat Hill in the Ochils after a passer-by heard his cries for help. He was airlifted to hospital with severe leg injuries and dehydration. He had left his home without money, bank cards or mobile phone.

Outcome: airlifted to Stirling Royal Infirmary with severe leg injuries and dehydration
