Torduff reservoir, Edinburgh

A 75-year-old hillwalker suffered cardiac arrest near Torduff reservoir in Edinburgh on Boxing Day and was pronounced dead at the scene. Tweed Valley Mountain Rescue and other emergency services attended but were unable to revive the casualty.

Outcome: casualty pronounced dead at scene

Tryfan, Snowdonia

climbing slip and fall Snowdonia Serious incident

Two climbers were injured when one slipped and fell on top of the other while descending a waterfall gully on Tryfan in Snowdonia. Both men fell approximately 3 metres; the more seriously injured casualty was airlifted to hospital by coastguard helicopter, while the second casualty walked off the mountain with assistance.

Outcome: more serious casualty airlifted to Ysbyty Gwynedd; second casualty walked down with help

Greenside mine area, Glenridding

animal rescue Lake District

Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team responded to a sheep trapped on a ledge above old mine workings in the Greenside mine area near Glenridding. Team members used a rope and pulley system to lower a rescuer who encouraged the animal back to safety. The sheep was successfully rescued and reunited with its flock.

Outcome: sheep rescued and returned to flock

Dovestone Reservoir, Oldham

A couple became lost in darkness near Dovestone Reservoir in Oldham with limited mobile battery. Oldham Mountain Rescue Team located them near Birchen Clough and escorted them to safety uninjured. The team issued safety guidance for autumn and winter walking.

Outcome: both walkers located unhurt and escorted to safety

Pentland Hills

injured runner Southern Uplands

A man slipped while running with a local club in the Pentland Hills and suffered a suspected dislocated knee. He was attended to by members of the running club and Police Scotland before being rescued by Tweed Valley Mountain Rescue with assistance from Border Search and Rescue Unit, and was transported to hospital.

Outcome: casualty evacuated to hospital by stretcher

Arthur's Seat, Edinburgh

A hillwalker was injured while climbing on Arthur's Seat in Edinburgh on Friday afternoon. Emergency services including Police Scotland, Scottish Ambulance Service, and mountain rescue teams responded to the incident. The casualty was evacuated using the Ambulance Service's all-terrain Wolverine vehicle and transported to hospital.

Mountain rescue teams in Snowdonia have responded to a significant increase in callouts, with teams highlighting a rise in unprepared walkers attempting routes on Snowdon and Tryfan. Recent rescues include a man evacuated by helicopter after sustaining a serious thigh fracture on Tryfan, and several other assistance calls for inadequately equipped visitors.

Birchen Clough, Dovestones

A female walker sustained a badly injured ankle after falling at Birchen Clough near Dovestones on Friday. Oldham Mountain Rescue Team attended and, assisted by doctors arrived via North West Air Ambulance Charity helicopter, provided pain relief and splinting before stretchering the casualty to an ambulance for transfer to hospital.

Outcome: casualty evacuated by stretcher to hospital

A body was recovered from the water near Beachley during the search for a 56-year-old woman from Lydney whose car was found near the M48 Severn bridge. Police and the coastguard coordinated the search with assistance from Severn Area Rescue Association. The death is not being treated as suspicious.

Tryfan, North Ridge

fall from height Snowdonia Serious incident

A walker suffered head injuries after falling 30 feet down the North Ridge of Tryfan while walking with his father. Fourteen rescuers from Ogwen Valley mountain rescue and a coastguard helicopter attended. The casualty was evacuated by helicopter and taken to hospital.

Bike Park Wales, Merthyr Tydfil

injured cyclist Brecon Beacons Serious incident

A cyclist suffered head and chest injuries during an incident at Bike Park Wales in Merthyr Tydfil on Monday. He was displaying signs of reduced neurological function and had a displaced clavicle. The Coastguard helicopter airlifted him to a helipad, and he was transported by road ambulance to University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff.

A medical emergency was reported on The Cobbler (Ben Arthur) near Arrochar, Argyll and Bute on 31 August 2021 at approximately 3.45pm. Ambulance, coastguard, and mountain rescue teams responded to assist a person requiring urgent medical attention. The casualty's condition following the incident was not disclosed.

Gold Diggings, Bodmin Moor

A 42-year-old man sustained spinal injuries after jumping into the water-filled quarry at Gold Diggings on Bodmin Moor. Emergency services responded and the casualty was evacuated by stretcher and transferred to Derriford Hospital for treatment.

Injury/Medical Assistance Skye

The team responded to several incidents over the week, including assisting with suspected broken ankles at Storr and another location near Sligachan. They also located a solo walker who was safe and well, and attended to a cragfast individual on Bruach na Frithe.

Outcome: Casualties treated and safely assisted off the mountain.

Dundonnell Mountain Rescue Team was called out on Friday night to search for a walker who had become lost in the hills north of Loch Mullardoch. The missing person was located uninjured near East Benula Lodge around 9.30pm. The team leader used the incident to emphasise the importance of carrying proper navigation equipment.

Steall Falls, Glen Nevis

A walker suffered an injury after falling near Steall Falls in Glen Nevis on Thursday evening. Other walkers at the scene provided assistance, and the casualty was airlifted by Inverness Coastguard helicopter to Glasgow's Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team was involved in the rescue.

Fall/Injury Brecon Beacons Serious incident

A Coastguard helicopter airlifted an injured walker to hospital following a fall near Llanthony, situated between Hereford and Abergavenny. The rescue team was called out on Sunday afternoon after the initial assessment determined specialist air assistance was required due to the nature of the injuries and location.

Snowdon

Two women were struck by lightning on the summit of Snowdon on 1 July 2021. One woman was found to be falling in and out of consciousness while the other sustained minor injuries. Both were evacuated to Clogwyn railway station and flown by coastguard helicopter to Bangor hospital, with rescuers reporting neither had life-threatening injuries.

Outcome: both casualties evacuated by helicopter to hospital

Crib Goch, Snowdon

A person died after falling approximately 25–30 metres on the lower slopes of Crib Goch's north ridge on Snowdon. Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team responded to reports of the fall, and the casualty was airlifted to hospital by Coastguard helicopter but was pronounced dead.

A 36-year-old man fell approximately 50 metres from the Trinnacle near Dovestone in February after blacking out whilst training for a charity climb. He was rescued by Oldham Mountain Rescue Team and evacuated by Yorkshire Air Ambulance to Sheffield Northern General Hospital with severe injuries to his right leg, which surgeons successfully saved. Several months later, he provided meals to the rescue teams as thanks for saving his life.

A woman in her 50s was found dead in the Gloucester-Sharpness canal near Frampton-on-Severn on 17 July following a search after she was reported missing. Police, fire and rescue, and the Severn Area Rescue Association were involved in the recovery operation. The death is not being treated as suspicious.

Central Beacons Mountain Rescue Team attended two separate incidents in the Neuadd Valley within consecutive days. On 14 July, a fell runner became detached from his partner and overdue, but was located safely in Pontsticill village. On 15 July, a couple lost on the Neuadd ridge and suffering from cold were located using mapping technology and escorted safely off the mountain.

Outcome: both incidents resolved safely; runner found in village, couple rewarmed and escorted off mountain

Snowdon, Pyg track

fall Snowdonia Serious incident

A walker fell approximately 100 feet on Snowdon near the Pyg track on Saturday morning and was airlifted to hospital. The casualty was initially treated by Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team volunteers and a Coastguard helicopter winchman before being flown to hospital. The rescue team was already operating in the area following an earlier call to assist another walker with a medical condition.

Outcome: airlifted to hospital

Three walkers became separated and lost while descending Beinn a' Chlaidheimh in Fisherfield Forest during the 'Big Six' Munro challenge on Saturday evening. A joint rescue operation involving Dundonnell Mountain Rescue Team and HM Coastguard helicopters was launched, and all three walkers were located safe and well by Sunday morning.
