Ben Cruachan

injured hillwalker Highlands Serious incident

A hillwalker fell on Ben Cruachan and sustained serious injuries. Oban Mountain Rescue Team and HM Coastguard Helicopter attended, winching team members down to treat the casualty before airlifting them to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Glasgow.

Outcome: casualty airlifted to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Glasgow by helicopter

Tower Ridge, Ben Nevis

crag-fast climbers Highlands

Two climbers became trapped on the eastern traverse of Tower Ridge, Ben Nevis, during heavy snow on the evening of 15 March 2023. Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team and search and rescue helicopter R151 conducted a challenging rescue operation in extreme weather conditions, successfully airlifting both casualties to safety by 2.30am.

Outcome: both casualties airlifted to safety by helicopter

Ben Nevis, Tower Ridge

Climbing/Stuck Highlands

Two climbers required a rescue after becoming stuck on Tower Ridge at Ben Nevis. The operation involved members of the Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team being lowered by rope before the pair were extracted by an Inverness Coastguard helicopter.

Outcome: Rescued

Ynysddu, Caerphilly

injured mountain biker Brecon Beacons

A mountain biker sustained a fracture dislocation of his ankle on a steep mountainside above Ynysddu on 12 March 2023. Central Beacons Mountain Rescue Team provided pain relief and splinted immobilisation before carrying him by stretcher off the mountain for hospital transport.

Outcome: casualty evacuated by stretcher to hospital

Moel Famau, Clwydian Range

walkers in poor weather Snowdonia

Two families walking on Moel Famau in north Wales called for help after being caught in poor weather with visibility reduced to 100 metres. North East Wales Search and Rescue deployed 4x4 vehicles to the hill. One family was assisted down by another walker whilst the other family descended safely on their own.

Outcome: both families descended safely without serious injury

Helvellyn, Lake District

hillwalkers in difficulty Lake District

Nine men from Manchester were assisted off Helvellyn by Patterdale Mountain Rescue after becoming caught in blizzard conditions and deep snow. The group had set off late in the day without navigation equipment and got into difficulty after dark. All were safely evacuated with no injuries reported.

Outcome: all nine men safely assisted off mountain, no injuries

A walker strayed from the path on Yr Wyddfa in poor weather and became stranded on the east ridge. Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team located the casualty at 23:30 and, after warming measures including a special jacket, roped them to the summit and brought them to safety by 04:30.

Outcome: rescued and brought to base

Blaenrhondda, Rhondda

A 57-year-old man went missing near Treorchy, Wales on 7 March 2023 and remained unaccounted for after 17 days. Central Beacons and Western Beacons Mountain Rescue Teams assisted South Wales Police in searching mountains, woodland and waterways during challenging conditions, though the organised search was stood down on 9 March.

Pen-y-Fan, Brecon Beacons

hypothermia Brecon Beacons

A 20-year-old wild camper was rescued from the summit of Pen-y-Fan in the Brecon Beacons after encountering difficulties in adverse weather conditions during the early hours of 7 March 2023. Central Beacons and Brecon Mountain Rescue Teams responded, and the casualty was treated for hypothermia before being assisted off the hill and returned to family.

Beinn an Lochain, Argyll and Bute

A 66-year-old hillwalker failed to return from a planned walk on Beinn an Lochain in Argyll and Bute on 26 February 2023. His body was found on the hill approximately three hours after the alarm was raised. There were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death.

Glencoe, above Fionn Ghleann

Members of Tweed Valley Mountain Rescue Team assisted Glencoe MRT in a search for a missing walker and his dog in the Glencoe area. The bodies were found in a deep gorge above Fionn Ghleann on Saturday afternoon. The deaths are not considered suspicious.

Outcome: body recovered from gorge

Quinag

injured mountaineer Highlands

A mountaineer sustained a lower limb injury on Quinag and was airlifted to hospital. Assynt Mountain Rescue Team attended and provided medical treatment and pain relief before the casualty was transferred to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness.

Barcaldine forest, Argyll and Bute

injured mountain biker Highlands Serious incident

An experienced mountain biker suffered serious injuries whilst on a night ride with friends in Barcaldine forest, Argyll and Bute. Oban Mountain Rescue Team attended and the casualty was assessed, packaged and stretchered to a waiting ambulance for transport to hospital. His injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

Outcome: casualty stretchered to ambulance and transported to Lorne and Isles Hospital

Caerketton Hill, Pentland Hills

Injury/Fall Southern Uplands

A mountain rescue team rescued an injured walker on Caerketton Hill after she broke her ankle while slipping. To reach her quickly in poor conditions, rescuers improvised by using a ski tow to ascend the hill before sledging her down the dry ski slope.

Outcome: The injured walker was safely evacuated.

Galloway Hills (Millfore area)

Missing animal search Southern Uplands

Drone Pilots assisted Lost Dogs Dumfries and Galloway in a search for a missing fox terrier within the Millfore area of the Galloway Hills. The operation concluded with a successful outcome.

Outcome: Dog located

Keswick town centre, Museum Square

cardiac arrest Lake District Serious incident

A 52-year-old man suffered a cardiac arrest in Keswick town centre and was revived by bystanders including a former firefighter and a member of Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team who performed CPR for approximately 20 minutes until paramedics arrived and used a defibrillator. The casualty was airlifted to hospital and survived.

Outcome: casualty resuscitated and airlifted to hospital

A hillwalker sustained a broken ankle on Caerketton Hill in the Pentlands near Edinburgh on Saturday evening. Tweed Valley Mountain Rescue teams used a makeshift sled fashioned from a stretcher to evacuate her down the artificial ski slope at Hillend. The casualty was transferred to hospital for further treatment.

Outcome: casualty evacuated by stretcher and transferred to hospital

Glen Coe, above Fionn Ghleann

missing person Southern Uplands Serious incident

A 33-year-old walker from West Yorkshire and his beagle went missing in Glen Coe on 18 February 2023. Their bodies were discovered on 22 February in a deep gorge above Fionn Ghleann and recovered by mountain rescue teams from multiple services working together.

Outcome: bodies recovered from gorge

Ballachulish / Glen Nevis

Training Exercise Highlands

The Ochils Mountain Rescue Team conducted their annual winter training over the weekend. Activities included practicing personal and rescue skills in a winter environment, with specific sessions held on Schoolhouse Ridge above Ballachulish and technical rescue drills in Glen Nevis.

Outcome: Successful completion of annual winter training.

Corn Du, Brecon Beacons

dog fall from mountain Brecon Beacons

A spaniel fell from the summit of Corn Du in the Brecon Beacons. The owners retrieved the dog and Central Brecon Mountain Rescue Team assisted with carrying her off the mountain and provided first aid. Veterinary examination confirmed no internal injuries, with only minor dental damage.

Outcome: dog retrieved and carried off mountain, received canine first aid and veterinary care, no serious injuries

Dovestone

collapsed walker Peak District

A man collapsed while walking in the Dovestone area on Valentine's Day and was rescued by Oldham Mountain Rescue Team. Following an initial unsuccessful search, the team located him below Fox Stone and evacuated him by stretcher to hospital.

Outcome: casualty evacuated by stretcher to hospital

Cross Fell

Search and Rescue (Deceased) Lake District Serious incident

Just before midnight on New Year's Eve, the team responded to a search for a missing fell runner on Cross Fell. Sadly, the individual was found deceased the following day.

Outcome: Fatal outcome after search efforts.
