The Cheviot

Aircraft accident/Rescue North East

A multi-agency response was launched following a crashed glider high up on The Cheviot in Northumberland. The operation involved personnel being airlifted to the site and culminated in a stretcher lowering for the pilot to be transferred to a waiting helicopter.

Outcome: Pilot was taken to hospital and is recovering.

Two men died in separate falls on Wee Binnian and Slieve Commedagh in the Mourne Mountains on Sunday during high winds. A third man suffered a broken ankle in a separate incident and was rescued. The deaths are attributed to exceptional wind conditions that caught walkers unaware.

Outcome: two fatalities at scene, one casualty with broken ankle rescued

Dumyat in the Ochil Hills

Paragliding accident Highlands

A paraglider crashed near Stirling on Dumyat in the Ochil Hills. The Ochils Mountain Rescue Team and Ambulance Service responded to the scene, and a helicopter was used to airlift the individual to Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow.

Outcome: Rescued and transported to hospital

A 21-year-old German student died after falling 500 feet from a ridge on Carn Mor Dearg Buttress on Ben Nevis on New Year's Day. Three other members of the climbing party became cragfast and were rescued by helicopter. The incident was attributed to dangerous conditions including verglas on the mountain.

Outcome: casualty fatality; three others rescued by helicopter

A University of Bristol student died after falling approximately 500 feet while climbing the ledge route on Ben Nevis on New Year's Day. The incident occurred in icy conditions; three companions were safely evacuated by helicopter after becoming stranded, and the casualty was recovered by Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team.

Outcome: casualty died at scene

A missing person was reported on 30 December after his car was found abandoned at Ardgartan car park in Glen Croe near Arrochar. Despite an extensive seven-day search in extreme terrain by Arrochar and Police Scotland mountain rescue teams, the man was not located and police continued their enquiries.

Outcome: not located after seven-day search

Mourne Mountains

missing runner Northern Ireland Serious incident

A runner went missing on the Mourne Mountains and was subsequently found dead. Seventeen members of the Mourne Mountain Rescue Team, along with local police and Police Air Support, conducted a search and recovery operation. The death was not being treated as suspicious.

Outcome: body recovered

cragfast walker and hypothermia Lake District

Three walkers were rescued in two separate incidents in the Lake District on 20 December after becoming caught out by bad weather. A 39-year-old woman became cragfast on Blencathra near Atkinson Pike, unprepared for strong winds; she was found and safely descended. Shortly after, two 24-year-old women on the Helvellyn range reported one suffering from hypothermia and were located and escorted to safety.

Outcome: both casualties safely descended and escorted to accommodation

Ben Nevis, Tower Gully

A 21-year-old climber died after falling in Tower Gully on Ben Nevis on Sunday 16 December. His climbing partner also fell but survived with non-life threatening injuries. The casualty was airlifted to hospital but died from his injuries.

Tryfan, Snowdonia

walkers stuck in gully Snowdonia

Two walkers were rescued from North Gully on Tryfan after becoming stuck near the bottom of the gully. During the rescue, mountain rescuers identified a large boulder weighing approximately four tons perched precariously above the gully, which has been reported to the National Trust and Snowdonia National Park Authority.

Outcome: both walkers brought to safety by rescue team

Newcastleton, Borders forest

missing person Southern Uplands

A teenager was reported missing after failing to return from a late-night walk near Newcastleton in the Scottish Borders. Following an extensive overnight search involving mountain rescue teams, police, and dog handlers, the young person was located by a police officer on a minor road near the village at 6am after having taken a wrong turning in the forest.

Outcome: found safe by police officer

A sheep stranded on a steep cliff near Bull Ghyll at Honister Pass for three weeks was rescued by Cockermouth Mountain Rescue Team volunteers. The team used fixed climbing cables and a metal bridge to reach and safely bring down the animal.

Outcome: sheep successfully rescued

mountain biker injured in fall Northern Ireland Serious incident

A mountain biker sustained serious injuries after falling during an event in the Mourne Mountains. The incident occurred during an organised event in the area.

fatal fall Snowdonia Serious incident

A 70-year-old man fell from Snowdon near the intersection of the Miners and PYG tracks on Tuesday afternoon and was airlifted to hospital by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency Rescue helicopter. Despite the efforts of rescue teams and medical staff, he did not survive his injuries.

Outcome: casualty died from injuries despite airlift and hospital treatment

Striding Edge, Helvellyn

lost dog Lake District Serious incident

Patterdale Mountain Rescue Team spent approximately five hours searching for a distressed Alsatian on Striding Edge, Helvellyn, on Friday. The dog was safely rescued and handed to police while efforts were made to locate its owners.

Outcome: dog rescued and passed to police

fatal mountain fall Highlands Serious incident

A 16-year-old fell fatally while walking on Stac Pollaidh north of Ullapool on 26 August 2018. Emergency services were alerted after he was reported overdue, and his body was recovered by Dundonnell Mountain Rescue Team with assistance from a coastguard helicopter.

Outcome: fatality

Two 16-year-old girls from an outdoor education centre group were rescued from Cader Idris on 23 August 2018 after one lost consciousness following a fall on loose ground and the other developed hypothermia symptoms. Both were winched to safety by coastguard helicopter and flown to Bronglais Hospital in Aberystwyth.

Outcome: both casualties winched to safety by helicopter and flown to hospital

Slieve Bearnagh, Mourne mountains

hiker struck by falling sheep Northern Ireland Serious incident

A teenager hiking in the Mourne mountains was struck by a sheep that fell from a crag near Hare's Gap on Slieve Bearnagh. He was evacuated by seventeen Mourne Mountain Rescue Team members and taken to hospital, where he was treated and discharged. The sheep was believed to be uninjured.

Outcome: casualty taken to hospital, treated and discharged

Missing Person Search Highlands

The team was called out to the Ben Lawers area to search for two missing hillwalkers. The individuals were successfully located using SARLOC technology and subsequently walked off the mountain by team members.

Outcome: Found/Safe

Blue Pool, Bishops Itchington

A 17-year-old got into difficulties while swimming at the Blue Pool in a disused quarry at Bishops Itchington on 26 July and died. His body was recovered the following day. The pool, located within a former limestone quarry, had warning signs in place but swimming had continued despite efforts by the site operators to prevent it.

Outcome: fatality

Carn Mor Dearg, Lochaber

A 58-year-old walker died after falling on Carn Mor Dearg in Lochaber on Monday 16 July. Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team and a Coastguard helicopter attended but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Outcome: casualty pronounced dead at scene

Dinas Mot, Snowdonia

climber fall with head injury Snowdonia Serious incident

A woman fell approximately 130 feet while climbing on Dinas Mot in Snowdonia and sustained a significant head injury, becoming unconscious and suspended from the crag by her climbing ropes. Fellow climbers on the scene immediately provided assistance, and the Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team coordinated with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency Rescue 936 helicopter, which winched the casualty to safety and transported her to hospital.

Outcome: airlifted to hospital by coastguard helicopter; transferred to Ysbyty Gwynedd

Dinas Mot, Snowdonia

climber - fatal head injury Snowdonia Serious incident

Dr Vun Lim, a 51-year-old consultant rheumatologist, died from a serious head injury sustained while rock climbing on Dinas Mot in Snowdonia on 28 June 2018. Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team and a coastguard helicopter responded to the incident, and she was airlifted to hospital but later succumbed to her injuries.

Outcome: casualty died of injuries in hospital

Ennerdale, Lake District

A 70-year-old experienced walker from Liverpool was rescued from the fells near Ennerdale after suffering heat exhaustion and activating a personal locator beacon. The distress signal was routed via satellite through a response centre in Houston, Texas, before reaching UK authorities and Cockermouth Mountain Rescue. The casualty was treated in hospital and not seriously injured.

Outcome: casualty treated in hospital, not seriously hurt
